About OC Waste & Recycling

OC Waste & Recycling is the department that serves the County’s solid waste disposal needs by providing waste management services, protecting the environment, and promoting recycling in order to ensure a safe and healthy community for current and future generations.

OC Waste & Recycling manages one of the nation’s premiere solid waste disposal systems serving residents and businesses. On behalf of 34 cities and over 3 million residents, the department efficiently operates a network of three active landfills that are among the largest in the state.

These state-of-the-art facilities use sanitary and environmentally friendly methods for ground & air maintenance, including the use of special falconer programs to eliminate scavenger birds and weed abatement efforts involving real goats. OC Waste & Recycling also manages and monitors 20 closed landfills and former disposal stations throughout the county.

In addition, the department operates four Household Hazardous Waste Collection Centers. These centers provide visitors with a convenient way for county residents to dispose of home hazardous waste, which includes: common cleaning-gardening-painting-workshop products or materials that contain corrosive, toxic, ignitable or reactive ingredients; propane tanks and other flammable items; and, electronic waste such as computer monitors and game consoles.

OC Waste & Recycling also administers the popular Eco Challenge recycling in-school education and outreach programs. The programs, which feature the “Eco Crew” of animation characters who challenge residents of all ages to reduce-reuse-recycle, are provided in partnership with Discovery Cube Orange County and Inside the Outdoors.
