In honor of America Recycles Day on November 15, we're excited to highlight some best recycling practices with online activities, helpful tips, and a fun social media contest! We're partnering with Discovery Cube Orange County to promote proper and effective recycling. Residents of OC who pledge to recycle through OCWR's social media channels will have a chance to win a family four pack of Discovery Cube OC.
Discovery Cube Orange County features the Organic Waste Lab, an interactive and engaging exhibit that showcases the wonders of composting and recycling organic waste. Visitors can explore the red wiggler worm station, a waste decomposition wall and participate in the interactive World of Organic Waste competition station.
To enter for a chance to win the family four pack of tickets to Discovery Cube OC, residents can make a recycling pledge on OCWR's Facebook or Instagram pages. Simply "like" the contest post and comment on how you plan to recycle on America Recycles Day and beyond. Each pledge counts as one entry, with a limit of one entry per person; duplicate pledges will not be accepted. The winner will be randomly selected and announced on America Recycles Day, November 15. Don't forget to follow OCWR on social media @OCwaste to participate!
Recycling and reducing your daily waste can be as simple as one, two, three!
Step 1: Reduce | Minimizing the amount of material we use is a crucial step in decreasing our waste. Before making a new purchase or buying in bulk, think about whether the item will be used frequently. This is particularly important for food, as organic waste makes up a significant portion of our recycling stream. |
Step 2: Re-Use | Before discarding an old item, take a moment to consider if it can be reused. Whether you repurpose an old dresser or donate textiles to a local charity, keeping usable items out of the landfill is vital. For food waste, think about ways to minimize it or explore composting options. |
Step 3: Recycle | Most plastics, aluminum cans, and unbroken glass containers can usually go in your curbside recycling bin. Edible food can be preserved by freezing for later use or donated to food pantries and those in need. Residents of OC can recycle mattresses for free and can find a Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center nearby for the proper disposal of paint, e-waste, batteries, and more. |
