FAQs for Household Hazardous Waste, Fire Debris Removal and Cleanup for residents and businesses impacted by the Airport Fire.

FAQs

Wildfire disaster debris can range from burned organic material such as ash, vegetation, trees, branches, etc., to construction debris, furniture, or appliances from burned structures. It’s important to determine if your disaster debris may contain hazardous materials, which may require special handling or disposal. Residents and businesses should follow appropriate protocols by local authorities for inspection and disaster debris handling. A Resources Page is available at OCgov.com/Resources

Leftover household products that contain corrosive, toxic, ignitable, or reactive ingredients are considered to be “household hazardous waste” or “HHW.” Products, such as paints, cleaners, oils, batteries, and pesticides that contain potentially hazardous ingredients require special care when you dispose of them.

Residential household hazardous waste may be taken to Household Hazardous Waste Collection Centers in San Juan Capistrano, Anaheim, and Irvine locations. Huntington Beach is temporarily closed for planned construction improvementsThe San Juan Capistrano Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center is co-located at the Prima Deshecha Landfill.

When transporting Household Hazardous Waste the following restrictions apply:

  • A maximum of 15 gallons or 125 pounds may be transported per vehicle, per trip (Department of Transportation Requirement). It is illegal to exceed these limits.
  • Containers larger than five gallons will not be accepted.
  • Containers will NOT be returned, except for oil containers, upon request.
  • Materials must be in original containers (except motor oil, fuels and antifreeze).
  • All containers must have lids, be sturdy, non-leaking, labeled and protected.
